More Trees, More Scenery - 1953

Leaving for Montana - August 1953
Picture
We went up Lewiston Hill
on the old Spiral Highway.
64 curves over 8 miles.

No "Runaway Truck Ramps."
A lot of gear-shifting on the floor-mounted lever.
Norman’s left knee became adept at anticipating
the next gear ratio.

We stayed at Moscow,
then visited Wallace,
the Burke Canyon,
and Lakeside.

Visited at Kalispell,
and stayed at the cabin.

Donald and Ruth used several furlough days to take their new car to Kalispell, Flathead Lake, and Glacier Park

Norman ‘helped’ Dad harvest trees by carrying a heavy 10’ log choker chain over one shoulder
and dragging the winch cable over the other,
then hiking a maximum of the 200 feet cable length into the forest to attach the cable to the fallen tree.
The tree was then winched out through the woods until close to the truck, then towed to the cutting and loading area.
Logs were cut to 8 foot lengths, then skidded up to load perpendicular across the truck bed.

Norman's 10th birthday was at the steps of the cabin.
No cake, but pancakes for breakfast.
Offered some to the local birds. They took it from my hand.

Opened a toy jeep gift from the Hosses and Gumesons.
Don't know how they got it there.
Must have been hidden somewhere on the truck.

I asked: "Why did you buy all these trees."
"Oh, we thought we might retire here someday."
A 'suspicious' answer.

I believe the original plan was to live here,
pending permanent employment at or near Kalispell,
like the other transplanted homesteaders,
but the employment wasn't happening.

Mom and Norman took the train back to Portland.
Dad returned home after the Christmas tree season.
